Ruth Miller PhD, Lead Research Pharmacist
“I’m the boss – need the info”: the triumphs and challenges of using data to inform commissioned health services
Dr Ruth Miller Regional Project Manager for Medicines Optimisation in Older People (MOOP) in Northern Ireland and Lead Research Pharmacist in the Western Health and Social Services Trust (WHSCT).
Dr Miller previously worked in community pharmacy, GP practices and academia before taking up her current roles based in the Western Trust and the Medicines Optimisation and Innovation Centre (MOIC). Her research interests currently focus on: consultant pharmacist led medicines optimisation, pharmaceutical case management, data modelling and risk stratification with the aim of ensuring data informs healthcare interventions are delivered to the right patient, in the right place and at the right time. Dr Miller has designed, evaluated and project managed a number of award winning and innovative new healthcare services including the consultant pharmacist led case management of older patients in intermediate care (Winner of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain Pharmaceutical Care awards, 2014) and medicines optimisation and case management of COPD patients in GP practices (Winner, HSJ Value in Healthcare awards, Pharmacy and Medicines optimisation, 2016). Dr Miller also led the MOOP team entries which won the Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards Hospital Pharmacy Team of the Year and the AbbVie Sustainable Healthcare national award for 'making health and social care patient friendly' in 2017. She is author of more than 70 publications and in her ‘spare time’ enjoys writing further on her blog (The Swan Doctor) about her personal development and life experiences from the perspective of a busy and successful professional woman.
